The Bed-Stuy Community Eco Mapping Mural

Artist and wall needed:

We are looking to create a large-scale mural on a prominent wall in
Bed-Stuy. The mural will highlight Bedford-Stuyvesant’s green assets,
including environmentally responsible businesses, restaurants that use
local foods, farmers markets, green learning centers and programs,
community gardens, including key sites within the community’s largest
and oldest green space, anchored by the Magnolia Tree Earth Center,
Herbert Von King Park and the Hattie Carthan Community Garden. The
purpose of the Map Mural is to be an effective tool for community
advocacy, highlighting social, cultural and service resources of a
particular geographical area.

The mission is to help develop a community map that can assist with
the identification of vacant public land for community gardens use,
help coordinate outreach around ‘green’ activities, and to support and
encourage networking among community activist, advocates and decision
makers.

As part of the initiative, we will work with local Bed-Stuy High
School Students where they will be given the opportunity to engage
their community on this very important level. The students will
collaborate with the Bed-Stuy Community Eco Mapping Project and
Magnolia Tree Earth Center to make sketches for the mural. They will
conduct surveys in the neighborhood to collect data on sustainability
and will create icon stickers that can be displayed on store windows
and on the mural to raise awareness of business that promote and
encourage sustainability. The students will work with the Mural
Artist in the designing and execution for painting the Mural.
