From July 22-23 I put in a few hours of sweat equity with several other volunteers to assemble a hoop house and a small aquaponic farming system at Bed-Stuy Farms located at Brooklyn Rescue Mission. Will Allen’s staff at Growing Power drove two days to get to the Stuy from Milwaukee and spent another two days with us in sweltering 100 degree weather to ensure that the project was well constructed.
Brooklyn Rescue Mission is one of the most progressive, active and important anti-poverty/hunger programs in New York City. Reverend Robert Ennis Jackson and his partner Rev. DeVanie Jackson, both pioneers of urban farming practices, are in the mist of something special and creative; creating a working lab for all community residents to experience urban ag at its best. But don’t just take my word for it! Make an appointment to visit this urban oasis of the future for yourself and bring your checkbook with you. You won’t be disappointed!
