Discussing food justice @ Fieldston School, MS 202 “Omnivore’s Forum”

I was recently invited to speak about the Bed-Stuy Community Eco-Mapping Project at the Fieldston School, a private independent school in Riverdale, NY (the Bronx). The middle school students and faculty all had to read, “Omnivore’s Dilemma” as their summer reading and hosted an “Omnivore’s Forum” to discuss the issues raised in the book. I was asked to share my work on food justice in Central Brooklyn and how the Bed-Stuy Community Eco-Mapping Project highlighted the role social, political and economic factors play in our food system.

As you can imagine, the Fieldston school is far different from the schools that exist in Bed-Stuy. Most of the presenters were private business owners, so my project was an opportunity for students to hear about food justice and what youth in Bedford Stuyvesant are doing to promote sustainable urban agriculture and social justice. The event was very well organized thanks to Rochelle Reodica, the Diversity Co-Coordinator who put it together. Below are some pics!
